Introduction of the Tilapia hatchery in Ghana

In 2010 we built one of the first and largest RAS tilapia hatchery in Ghana. Our client, West African Fish, started in 2007 growing tilapia in cages in Lake Volta near Asikuma. In order not to be dependent on local tilapia fingerling producers, they have chosen to do the entire tilapia fingerling production in-house.

The hatchery is constructed on the shore of Lake Volta, close to their cages. By building the hatchery on land, the tilapia can grow into a strong juveniles in optimal conditions. Then the tilapia juveniles are transferred into one of the large round HDPE grow out cages

Different hatchery systems

This tilapia hatchery in Ghana consists of the following systems:

  • 10x RAS tilapia broodstock spawning systems. In these systems the broodstock fish will breed and eggs are collected.
  • Incubation facility, consisting of 8 RAS incubation systems.
  • 5x Primary nursery system, a full RAS systems consisting of 6 full fibre glass tanks, biotower and sedimentation filter. Growth from 0.2 gram to 1 gram fingerlings.
  • 3x Secondary nursery system, a full RAS systems consisting of 12 full fibre glass tanks, biotower and drum filter. Growth from 1 gram to 5 gram juveniles.
  • Quarantine system. Imported future broodstock will be put in quarantine in this RAS system.
  • Water treatment unit
